Head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution Maassen: Manipulation accusations prove or dismissal!
The German Journalists Union (dju) in ver.di has called on the President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maaßen, to immediately prove his accusations of manipulation against journalists. "We have reports from colleagues in Chemnitz that testify to the authenticity of the hunts and attacks. Those who deny that these events took place seem to have their own political agenda. If Mr Maaßen cannot prove his statements beyond doubt, he is not suitable for such a high office and must be dismissed as quickly as possible," demanded Cornelia Haß, the Federal Director of the dju.
Maassen had questioned hunts during the demonstration in Chemnitz and expressed the suspicion that such film footage was "deliberately false information". This is a concrete accusation of manipulation by the media, according to the dju. "The media play an indispensable role in our democracy. The way in which this role is currently repeatedly called into question is unacceptable. The president of a state organ must also be able to publicly prove such publicly expressed accusations if he does not want to expose himself to the suspicion of preparing the way for right-wing violence in Germany", said Haß.
Maaßen had already attracted attention in 2015 because he was said to have given the then AFD chairwoman Petry advice on how the right-wing extremist party could escape observation by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
