Enforce press freedom!
The German Journalists' Union (dju) in ver.di has called on politicians and security authorities not only to make a strong and decisive commitment to the rule of law, but also to follow up the words with effective action. "On the weekend, numerous attacks on journalists were again reported from Chemnitz," explained Cornelia Hass, Federal Managing Director of dju in ver.di. "If, despite the presence of the police, neo-Nazis can beat a reporter's camera out of her hand with impunity or physically attack a journalist, then freedom of the press and thus the rule of law are at stake. Police and politicians must act urgently and immediately to ensure that journalists can do their job - and that consists of free and unchecked reporting", Haß reiterated.
Instead of defending freedom of the press, Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has, however, repeatedly established a direct connection between "national reporting" and the further escalating situation in Saxony. "This publicly discredits the work of journalists. But the problem is not the reporting, the problem is the violent rights: Our fundamental rights and democracy must be defended against them, with words and deeds," Haß demanded.
